Denotations and connotations of opening scene.



Within the first few seconds of this first scene a feather is shown floating gracefully through the air down to the ground. This denotation can be seen as peace and a gentle beginning, however the opening scene presents us with a grey dull sky which forms a connotation of sadness which immediately relates the film to a gloomy, cheerless genre.

As the feather falls it brings in the setting to the scene by a circular view which is a rich looking area as it is built up with large buildings and many of them compact together. These two denotations together create a connotation of a sad life in a large town or city.
As the feather falls it shows the levels of the large buildings which shows how big these buildings really are against trees aswell.

As the camera view continues to lower it then looks back up at the grey sky which continues to create the mood of sorrow.
As the feather reaches the floor level it is continuously swept away again which shows distraction, hopelessness and annoyance in the journey until it finally reaches its end when it lands by the shoe of a man sitting on a bench.

This man reflects the sadness of the beginning of the film like the grey sky as he is alone and looks unhappy. This connotation of sadness in the man is formed by a cheerless facial expression and he is sitting quietly by himself.
We see the man tuck the feather away in his suitcase which creates a connotation of care, which shows that the man is loving because it is only a light object which fell from the sky. He
