Semiotics
Semiotics is the study of signs and images. It tells us what we see and what they could mean.
Denotations- A denotation is what you first see and what you can gather from the image.
Connotations- Looking deeper, a connotation is what ideas you gather from these denotations, the clues of what the picture is actually about.

The denotations of this film image is a dull house standing behind a dark figure with their back to the camera. The shirt is dirty and ripped on this person.
The connotations of this image is the danger of the dark abandoned house and the rips in the mans shirt forms a negative feeling.
The colour of the poster uses black and white which suggests it is a horror.
In the top right corner the image of an empty branch is displayed which shows a connotation of a creepy eerie scene which works well with the nettles by the door of the house.
Visible in the poster, by the window of the house the camera appears blury which creates a struggle to see in the window which makes a connotation of mystery and scare.
The poster is presented by the images in a circle which makes connotations of the thought of someone looking through a camera at the scene, this causes secrecy and a furtive atmosphere.
The denotations of this poster creates negative connotations which shows the genre is horror.
