Juno Re-make Task

Juno Task

Here is the original clip of 'Juno All I Want Is You' which we had to re-create to practise our camera, premiere and teamwork skills.

Our Juno Re-Make

Here is my edit of our Juno re-make. We separated in our groups and produced our own video which we added the clips we created and the music.

Evaluation of my Juno re-make

Creating our storyboards:
When creating a storyboard for our task, I think my group worked well to include all the correct images and settings as we worked well in a team. Whilst one person drew the images in the video the other wrote the description below saying what needed to be included. This method worked well as the person who drew contributed their good drawing skills whilst the writer (myself) added their literacy skills to the plan.

Storyboards:
Overall we believe that our storyboards were effective due to the fact we understood what each clip needed when it came to filming. When filming, we tried our best to stick to the storyboards by remembering each clip with the help from each image however some clips we filmed were hard to copy from the storyboard because it was hard to find similar settings to the original video.

Weaknesses when filming:
One thing we found tricky was measuring the clips to fit the video. We had trouble doing this because when it came to editing, we had to crop and delete parts of clips so the timings were then different. We could have improved this problem by filming longer then needed in the filming so we could have cropped it to the correct length. Our first clips were not long enough so had trouble editing it to fit the original but as we continued with the further scenes, timings became more synchronised.

Filming:
Overall the filming went well because we gathered a lot of the needed clips for our video. This meant it helped us when producing the final re-make. However certain clips didn't go completely to plan as timings were out and some camera shots and angles were jolty and rough. This could be improved by re filming these parts if we had more time.

I think our storyboard was quite accurate because it was relatively easy to film because it told us what to do, to improve it we could have added even more detail about background and could make it even more precise if we had the time.

Group strengths and weaknesses:
As a group I think we worked really well as we had no disagreements which made it easy to film what we needed to. We all had our own skills, strengths and weaknesses which differed from one another so we could all contribute our knowledge and ideas. Our group had the strengths of drawing skills, description and setting ideas which helped film our project. We all had our weaknesses (including lack of camera skills which can be worked upon) which was no problem because if someone was bad at something, it was someone else's strength which made our group strong to do the video.

Footage needed:
When it came to footage, we gathered most of what we needed. We aimed to complete half the original video which we did, as it lasts about a minute. There were details we missed out such as the first scene where people are seen running in the background, we could have asked another group to include this. Another scene where we could have improved detail would be the scene in the middle where we have the person standing still whereas the girl in the Juno clip is walking towards the camera. We should have included this to fit the original video. We also could have added more clips from the middle to the end of the video.

Premiere and animations:
When creating my own edited video, it forced me to work independently which was good because it made me learn a lot about premiere which I didn't know before. A personal struggle for myself would have been the programme of premiere but working alone helped me work towards my video effectively. I opened the programme and added all the video clips and music I needed and then started creating the video. I added animations to suit the camera angles from the original so it was more accurate. For example, I added a 'slide' effect from clip to clip where it occurred in the video. However, if I had time I could have added more animations and transitions.

Comparing to the original:
Compared to the original, we produced good storyboards to help film so particular clips were quite accurate, we made them accurate by looking at the surroundings and dressed the girl the same. We included relevant detail in our plans to know what hand to hold the prop in to make it more precise. My overall clip is similar but also has a few differences and if I were to it again I would add more detail in the clips such as adding more animations.

What went well:
Something that went really well in our films was our teamwork, we added ideas which we all listened to and this helped getting all the footage we needed. I personally improved my ability to work independently and produce this clip by myself which will help me with future projects and video editing.

To improve:
If we were to remake this video then I would improve by adding more animations and work more on timing when filming. I now know to add more time then needed as it will help when I am editing. I could also add more clips to continue the clip to last the whole duration of the song which would be better than it just stopping half way through the song.

My finished clip overall:
Overall, the start of the video wasn't too accurate and the middle is a bit jolty but I was pleased with the end clips as the timing is more precise to the original video, this shows that my premiere skills improved whilst learning independently which will help later on. With help after producing my finished work, I added animations and effects (such as a cartoon effect to relate to the first Juno video) this made it more accurate to watch with the original.

Personally this task has taught me a lot about what is involved in media. I have now learnt how to use the cameras for filming and the basic tools in premiere, I have also learnt how to work well in a group we were put into, come up with new ideas and work independently with something I have a weakness in.

Dancing Bears/James Bond Action Clip

Evaluation

Dancing bears:
When creating the 'dancing bears' video, we hadn't used the premiere programme before so I found it really hard to use. This task however was really useful for me because by the end I realised how to use the basic tools on the programme which will help greatly when it comes to more complex tasks.
Using this programme, I added videos of dancing bears and landscapes which we had to add together to form a video. I then added choose some music from the media drive which went with the video. Once I had done this I had to edit the film because there were pauses in the video where a black screen appeared, so I had to edit these blanks out so the video flowed better. This took time as I hadn't done it before so I had to figure out how to do it on the new programme.
This task has helped due to independent learning, I got taught a few things but most of the tools I had to practise myself which was really useful.

James Bond Scene:
As I spent most of the time on the first 'Dancing bears' video, I didn't have enough time to practise more and create the James Bond video. I only produced a few seconds for this scene as it took a long time learning the basics for the first task. However, although this second video was unsuccessfully finished, I learnt a great amount on the first which will help me with tasks in the future.
If I had more time I would have finished the James Bond scene to improve it, I would have added animations and edited it more. I could have added more effects such as fades and pauses but if needed I could always go back if I have more spare time.

Overall, I have learnt a lot from this task as I now know how to create a simple video on premiere, edit it, add features (music and effects) and how to transfer the video onto my blog through youtube embed.

Short Pixar film Narrative

Torodov theory

In 1969 Torodov produced a theory which he believed could be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They all went through stages called the equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption, attempt to repair and reinstatement of equilibrium.

Here is an example of a Pixar short film with the theory applied to...

Equilibrium-Rain starts to fall in a busy street, and objects start to smile (drains and gutters) Amongst others, a blue umbrella is seen happy in the street. The people come to a stop causing the umbrella to see the glowing red umbrella next to it. The red umbrella notices the blue one

Disruption- The people continue to walk causing the umbrellas to separate, objects begin to show sadness as they separate.

Recognition of disruption- Umbrellas are getting further apart and rain and wind is becoming stronger so is harder for them to return together. The umbrella escapes from the person and flies away.

Attempt to repair - Flies gracefully but sadly to try and find the red umbrella but cannot find it. Eventually sees the red umbrella but is caught by wind and flies away again. Objects around start to look scared and help the umbrella move out of traffic.

Reinstatement of equilibrium - Owner finally finds and picks up the umbrella which had been turned over on the road which is then joined by the red umbrella. The two owners walk off together which makes the umbrellas and objects around them happy again. The objects (drains, gutters and signs) begin to smile again as the two umbrellas sit together by the café where the scene started.

Vladimir Propp

Vladamir Propp came up with the theory that any story has the same/similar main characters within the film, especially Disney films.

Characters include...

The hero-Seeks something, usually love of the princess and to help her/someone.
Heroine/princess-The princess is who the hero falls in love with/tries to help
Princesses father-The father of the princess either gives the hero the task or dislikes the hero.
Villian-The one that gets in the way, who fights to hero.
Donor/mentor-Someone who gives something magical to the hero to help and prepare the for trouble.
Helper-A friend of the hero who helps him complete the task along the way.

An example...from Shrek...

Hero- Shrek

Princess- Fiona

Villian- Prince Charming, Fairy God Mother, Lord Farquaad

Princesses father- The King, Fiona's father

Donor- Magical dragon stops wedding, man who gives potion.

Helper- Donkey

Our film the Resurrection

The Resurrection

Together as a group, we were given a genre which we had to then create film idea suited to the genre. We were given Sci-Fi, then produced this power point presentation which tells the audience what the film is about. With help from four well-known actors/actresses we choose we developed a typical film storyline and added characters who would work well with the description we wanted.

Feedback

As we presented our film powerpoint to our audience, they filled in a sheet to evaluate our presentation we got back positive results back including character choice, narrative, genre and marketing.

For our title we got an average score of 7/10 and gathered positive comments such as 'Intriguing as it explores the possibilty of a new earth' and 'Intriguing as we want to know why it has that title'. However we also got not so positive comments like 'good title but I dont think it is relevant to the plot.' Overall though we choose quite a suitable title.

Another factor we were tested on was the characters we chose. We got an avaerage score of 8/10, comments suggested we chose good suitable actors and desrcibed them well, although one comment sugegsted adding 'even more well-known actors' Results showed that our character list was good.

We scored a 7/10 for narratrive suitable to the audience, we got this score as 'the genre of science was clear so people will know if they would like the film' however it is 'unrealistic' therefore may drag people away from watching the film although one comment said 'it will make it more interesting'

For narrative of genre we got positive feedback. We got another average of 8/10. This shows we chose a suitable storyline to suit our genre (Sci-Fi). We got comments like 'It suits the genre well' which was our aim.

When it came to the question 'Is the film different?' we got a 7/10 this relatively high score shows we tried to get away from the typical storylines in the genre. We got comments like 'Similar to others but from different angles' and 'yes imaginative ideas'.

As a final rating question the audience were asked 'does it include good ideas for marketing this film?' We got a 9/10 which was our highest score which we did best in. We got a comment 'good ideas'.

Our audience also got asked one last question, 'Would you buy this film rights?' and the majority of our feedback sheets said yes. A few said no but a couple said 'no because i dont like the genre' which showed most positive feedback.

Mis-en-scene

Mis-en-scene
Mis-en-scene is a French word meaning 'what is in the scene'

Mis-en-scene is put into five categories of what the audience see so they can recognise the genre from viewing these certain factors, they are...

-Settings and props
-Costume, makeup and hair
-Positioning of person or object in the frame
-Lighting and colours
-Facial expressions and body language.

Lighting
There are two main types of lighting used a lot in films, they are low-key and high-key lighting.

Low-key lighting is used to create a dark or dull setting where as high-key lighting is used to create a bright and cheerful setting.
Genres such as horror and sci-fi use low-key lighting because it creates an atmosphere of fear and mystery.
Other genres like rom-com and comedies use high-key lighting to form a happy atmosphere as these films are usually joyful and light-hearted.

Skyfall mis-en-scene

The picture above shows a scene from James Bond film Skyfall. This image uses high-key lighting to show the bright busy city of London. The image shows the well known city of London as the setting which shows the nationality of the British film. Other icons in the image include the British flag which also shows the pride in the country the other large buildings also represent this.

The costume of the figure (James Bond) is wearing dark clothing which shows he is an important role in the film, he is positioned quite close to the camera which also shows his importance. He stands quite casually but looks across the busy city to suggest he is proud and is gazing across the traditional grey buildings.

The Vow

From the trailer we see a newly-wed couple who are in love as we see the man ask for his partner to move in shorty after we see them get married. However further on in the trailer we see a dramatic change in the relationship when a car crash results in her forgetting who he is.
We discover that the film is then about them trying to make the relationship work, even though she cannot remember their love. He tries to recover this relationship.
The film is set in the season of summer, we can tell this by scenes outside including the first when they get married. This scene is created colourful by high-key lighting and continues this way throughout most the trailer, until the crash. When the couple start the traumatic part of their relationship, low-key lighting is introduced when the crash occurs at night and later in the hospital it is used to show a dark and sad setting.
This film has the genre of rom-com, an emotional and deep story which affects both main characters. Although to start with, the film includes comedy before the crash which turns the lives of the two roles upside down.
This romantic disaster is played by two main characters which clearly have love and passion for each other, the people the film have chosen are young to suit the story line of two young people falling in love and getting married.
The trailer suggests that the theme for this film is love and relationships and is related to the time of year, Valentines day.

Guardians of the galaxy

The trailer shows that most of the film is set inside an abnormal place, suggesting a space ship this feature helps the audience recognise its genre as Sci-Fi. This suggestion is then thought again when characters are introduced who are different, fictional personalities.
We first believe this film is Sci-fi but the trailer also shows the film includes humour therefore involves a wider audience.
The target audience for this film would be people who have enjoyed previous sci-fi films and people who enjoy an unrealistic comedy.
To begin with, the film is created as a mysterious setting due to dark clothing, low-key lighting and a blackened atmosphere. This then changes later when scenes are seen outside and in a lighter place, however to fit the genre, low-key lighting used the majority of the film. Both day and night scenes are used, dark to show fear at the start, but when we realise it includes humour day scenes are used to make it less threatening.
We know the film is also part comedy because the music changes from dramatic to cheerful and the characters are suggested to be less mature as one of them is a racoon.

Mrs Doubtfire
I have chosen Mrs Doubtfire because of the well known characters and the popular film itself.
Mrs Doubtfire is about a family breaking apart due to a divorce. This divorce leads to a loving father missing his children dearly as he no longer can see them when he wants to. The three children can only visit every so often and of course this isn't enough for him. To see his children he will do anything and after hearing news that his wife wants to employ a nanny, he applies for the job. With a new makeover he is disguised as a nanny just so he can see his children. This trailer shows this is a comedy by showing funny parts of the film when things go wrong.
The setting is in America, a well brought up area as they live in a large house where most of the film is set. Other scenes are shown outside using high-key lighting making it a family drama/comedy.
Characters include the family of five and a new boyfriend of the mother, who Mrs Doubtfire obviously doesn't like.
The theme to this film is family and care for the fathers children and includes all ages within the film therefore adds interest to any age, especially families.

Genre images

Genre
Genre puts all films into category in which they are themed, they are separated into what styles and audience they have.
Genre types include:
-Comedy
-Rom Com
-Action
-Horror
-Thriller
-Sci-Fi
-Historical
-Fantasy
-Adventure
-Crime
-Family drama
-Sport
-Musical

Our task was to create a typical photo associated with a few genres.

       Rom-com

This image shows the genre of a rom-com. We used bright colours to show high-key lighting which is usually used for this genre.
We used the background as a flower bed which also shows the genre as a pleasant image to go with the positive hand gesture.
This image is suitable for the rom-com genre because it suggests love and passion within the two hands joined, in front of bright green and pink colours representing love.
We used a close positioning to the camera frame because it shows the close connection between the two people.

 Horror

We produced this image for the genre horror, we used a dark filter to show low-key lighting to create a dark and eerie scene. We used the far away camera frame positing because it creates a creepy paranormal feature to the photo. We positioned the character in the photo so you can only see half of the figure, this creates suspense and mystery.
We also adjusted the hood on the character so it was up, this forms a darker personality which adds more fear to the image.
We used the mirror in the picture so it showed the role in the camera where it shouldn't be as it wouldn't normally be seen in a mirror looking back at you.
Also the view of a hand creeping round the wall suggests fear once again.

Action

For action, we used the setting in the car park. We used low-key lighting to create shadows under the car and used the central position to place the character. We took the photo from under the next car as action films usually use modern cars and technology. Action films mostly use dark colours to illustrate their film cover as black is a common colour for this genre.
We used this image to suggest that a mission is taking place in the photo because the role has a facial expression of concentration as the eyes are looking straight at the camera.

 Sci-Fi

For sci-fi we used an image of an eye, which edited to duplicate the picture. Low-key lighting is used to create shadows and reflections in the eye, but it also uses high-key lighting to make the image bright and bold.
The image is up close to the frame which creates a daring and striking impression of the sci-fi film.
The glow of the colours form many shadows and reflection which bring more images to the photo as you look. For example, in the centre of the eye you can see behind the photo which produces a dark figure.

Comedy

For comedy we used a close to the frame position so the camera could focus on the grin on the character. This immediately shows that the genre could be comedy which works well with the high-key lighting normally seen in comedies as they are enjoyable.
The image works well as a comedy because the character is rebelling as she is climbing over the warning sign which is also focused on in the frame.

Denotations and connotations of opening scene.

Within the first few seconds of this first scene a feather is shown floating gracefully through the air down to the ground. This denotation can be seen as peace and a gentle beginning, however the opening scene presents us with a grey dull sky which forms a connotation of sadness which immediately relates the film to a gloomy, cheerless genre.

As the feather falls it brings in the setting to the scene by a circular view which is a rich looking area as it is built up with large buildings and many of them compact together. These two denotations together create a connotation of a sad life in a large town or city.
As the feather falls it shows the levels of the large buildings which shows how big these buildings really are against trees aswell.

As the camera view continues to lower it then looks back up at the grey sky which continues to create the mood of sorrow.
As the feather reaches the floor level it is continuously swept away again which shows distraction, hopelessness and annoyance in the journey until it finally reaches its end when it lands by the shoe of a man sitting on a bench.

This man reflects the sadness of the beginning of the film like the grey sky as he is alone and looks unhappy. This connotation of sadness in the man is formed by a cheerless facial expression and he is sitting quietly by himself.
We see the man tuck the feather away in his suitcase which creates a connotation of care, which shows that the man is loving because it is only a light object which fell from the sky. He

Semiotics, denotations and connotations

 Semiotics
Semiotics is the study of signs and images. It tells us what we see and what they could mean.

Denotations- A denotation is what you first see and what you can gather from the image.
Connotations- Looking deeper, a connotation is what ideas you gather from these denotations, the clues of what the picture is actually about.

The denotations of this film image is a dull house standing behind a dark figure with their back to the camera. The shirt is dirty and ripped on this person.
The connotations of this image is the danger of the dark abandoned house and the rips in the mans shirt forms a negative feeling.
The colour of the poster uses black and white which suggests it is a horror.
In the top right corner the image of an empty branch is displayed which shows a connotation of a creepy eerie scene which works well with the nettles by the door of the house.
Visible in the poster, by the window of the house the camera appears blury which creates a struggle to see in the window which makes a connotation of mystery and scare.
The poster is presented by the images in a circle which makes connotations of the thought of someone looking through a camera at the scene, this causes secrecy and a furtive atmosphere.
The denotations of this poster creates negative connotations which shows the genre is horror.

Denotations and connotations practice

The denotations of this trailer for the Fault in our stars is a love scene between two characters when they first meet. We can see smiles on their face which shows happiness and passion between them. The male in the clip is seen holding flowers whilst he peers into the girls eyes which creates a connotation of admiration.
In the clip we see how the girl has a life threatening illness which creates another connotation of fear for the two roles as facial expressions change and tears are seen in the faces of them.
